Capri Queen 2003
By Vidushi Seneviratne
One glamorous night, 26 beautiful young women, but only one of them would be queen.

Capri Queen - Himali Wijesekara

The Capri Queen beauty pageant 2003 held on March 15 at King's Court, Trans Asia Hotel saw tall beauty Himali Wijesekara being crowned Capri Queen 2003 by last year's winner, Ayesha Sandamalee. The fourth, third, second and first runners up were, Nadeeka Perera, Sithara Withanage, Tamara Simmons and Punsara Siriwardene respectively.

The pageant also featured a glitzy fashion show where extravagant outfits designed by Ruchira Silva of Rebel were modelled by the contestants. The outfits categorised under the themes of Captivating, Enchanting, Scintillating and Bewitching, were fittingly 'rebellious,' with bold colours and materials on the ramp.

Held for the fourth year in succession, the Capri Queen pageant gives Lankan girls from all parts of the island, a chance to enter the world of fashion and enables them to meet leading designers and choreographers and so widen their horizons. The Capri Queens of the past years are enough proof that this competition indeed gives the participants a chance to climb the ladder in fields such as modelling, fashion designing, television and cinema.

From among the hundreds of entries, the number was brought down to the final 26 contestants. After months of gruelling training mainly by Ms. Geraldine Bandaranaike, the girls were ready to present themselves at the pageant. The show was set in motion with the contestants taking the catwalk in the outfits categorised according to the four themes. Next in line was the collection of evening wear, aptly designed in pale gold and silver.

The contestants introduced themselves in the next round, building up a rapport with the judges. This was followed by the winners of the mini titles being announced. Apart from the usual titles such as Miss Congeniality, Miss Photogenic and Miss Catwalk, there was also Miss Beautiful Hair, Miss Talent and also Miss Bewitching, Miss Enchanting, Miss Captivating and Miss Scintillating, staying with the themes for the night.

The chief guest for the event was Ms. Abbas Esufally with the panel of judges for the night comprising Mr. Murtaza Esufally (Managing Director, Hemas Group), Ms. Padma Maharaja, Mr. Mallik J.
