Qatar Airways increases flights to Colombo

When Qatar Airways CEO Akbar Al Baker was in Sri Lanka about two years ago, Tamil Tiger rebels attacked the Colombo international airport causing chaos and destruction.

“I was in Colombo during that unfortunate incident,” recalled Al Baker during another visit to Colombo on Monday. The attack destroyed national carrier SriLankan Airlines fleet by half and triggered a mass pullout, at least temporarily, to and from Colombo.

Unfazed by what others were doing, Qatar Airways - in addition to being the only airline to continue flights in and out of Colombo at that time - increased its frequencies. “We have proved time and again like in Pakistan for instance that we don't run way from a conflict,” he noted at a news conference in Colombo to announce the launch of two additional flights between Colombo and Doha.

Qatar, a new kid on the block in the airline industry in the Gulf but seen as the fastest growing airline in the world, has grown tremendously over the past few years and is continuing on a buying spree with 17 aircraft on order to add to its fleet of 18.
Al Baker said Qatar is also the fastest growing economy in the world with per capita income increasing year after year, and has a growing expatriate population including many from Sri Lanka.

The Qatar Airways chief also met Prime Minister Ranil Wickremesinghe to discuss issues of mutual interest. “It was just a courtesy call.” Accompanying Al Baker was the airline’s Commercial Manager Mohamed Fakhri.

Latest solar power system in Sri Lanka
Solardynamics Pvt Ltd has launched the latest solar panel technology system from the USA aimed at the large urban market. This alternative mode of power generation would definitely reduce demand from the national grid power, Solardynamics Managing Director Lakshman Attygalle told the media at the launching ceremony.

He said that this new system which enables three rays of sunlight to be absorbed, is more efficient than the two-ray system, which is now widely used in rural areas in Sri Lanka.

The new technology is known as triple junction technology and its price ranges from Rs 24,000 to 84,000.

Attygalle said this solar technology can store a large intake of electricity in a shorter period of time, when compared to traditional systems.

The company plans to tap the urban market as well as untapped rural areas with a special offer of providing a TV or Radio as part of the solar package. (HS)
