Jith : From DJing to Engineering
DJ Jithendra, one of Sri Lanka's premier DJs now residing in Sydney has once again made a name for himself not in the entertainment field but in the academic world.

Jithendra was awarded a Master of Engineering In Telecommunication Network by the University of Technology, Sydney, Australia.

The name Jithendra will definitely ring a bell to all those night owls in Sri Lanka.

DJ Jith, who was on the forefront in the music scene in the mid 80's, where his big break came in the early 90's when he launched his professional DJ career and joined the Peacock Nightclub at the Mount Royal Hotel.

From then on it was a roller coaster ride for DJ Jith. Soon followed by the 'Sante-fe' with its Mexican flavour and night club Valentino. He was also attached to The Library at Trans Asia Hotel , The Little Hut at Mount lavinia hotel, which gave that outback feel to night clubbing.

Back home DJ Jith made a name for himself when he released Jith Mix 1 and 2, he is also hoping to release Jith Mix 3.

He left Sri Lanka for higher studies during the mid nineties as his. Ambition was to finish his Engineering degree and to continue his DJ work.

After he entered Central Queensland University, in Queensland, Australia he also managed to establish himself as the resident DJ of the ever popular nightclub the Irdcage Bar.

He was also attached to Vibes, The Booty Bar, Brown Sugar, Power Cuts and Kandiz respectively.

After graduating as a Mechanical Engineer in 2000, Jit decided to continue his studies and went on to complete a Masters Degree in Telecommunication Engineering in 2002.

While completing his Masters degree Jit managed to get himself back on track with his DJing.

This time it was the Afterhours Nightclub and Westside Flavour at the Caribbean Hideaway in Parramatta.

Fahmy sings at Elvis b'day
Fahmy Nazick -our very own ' Elvis' will be in action at the 68th birthday celebration of late Elvis Presley at the Hilton JAIC on January 10, 2003.

He will be singing most of his popular favourites and also his early recordings, which are not heard too often these days .

Elvis' birth anniversary falls on January 8, but the celebration will be on at the Union Bar and Grill Room on Friday January 10.

"Buy Originals Only"
Home Entertainment & Communications Ltd. (HECL) is the pioneering promoter of the original VCD and VHS cassettes in Sri Lanka.

TV Times & Entertainment in collaboration with Home Entertainment and Communications Ltd. (HECL), launched a monthly quiz in September to help the project "Buy Originals Only" and this is the fifth leg of the competition. The December quiz was - 'who plays 'Rock Star' in the movie of that title'

The lucky winner of this Quiz will be entitled to one original VCD disc or one original VHS cassette of he/her choice from Home Entertainment & Communications Ltd. (HECL). The answer to the December Quiz is " Mark Whalberg".

The lucky winner is Sasanke Jayawardena of 67A, Heenpandala Road, Galle. The winner could call over with his/her ID Card and collect the prize from the above address between 9.00 a.m. and 5.00 p.m. on any weekday.

The Beginning is back for Gypsies

'Gypsies platinum 'The Beginning' a new compact Disc on Torana label has now been released.

The beginning comprises of seventeen top hits of the Gypsies, who sang and recorded during the period of seventies and eighties.

These songs considered as platinum songs of Gypsies, where all five brothers were in full swing in 70's and 80's and propelled them to the top.

Sunil, Nihal, Piyal , Lal and Nimal as they started in early seventies released many songs on records and audios of which almost has become mega hits in the local music scene.

'Amma Amma'; 'Lidalanga Sangamaya', 'Jaya Mangalam', 'Suba Upandinak.' Wasana ' Oba Langin Innam' Mata Ayithiya Kandulai' 'Oba Duty Muldine', 'Owath Wedada', 'Mallika' 'Gange Paninawa' 'Sudu None', 'Hina Hina', 'Denadena Weradi Karanawa', 'Nande Mame' 'Ea Hinda' and 'Kurumitte featured in Gypsies'. The beginning' CD, hit the shelves of all music stores during the festive season .

All song mixed and engineered by Sunil and Piyal and recorded at Gypsies Recording Studio and 'Simply Sound' recording studio. This new CD is digitally mastered at Torana Recording Studio.

However Gypsies are now in New York and due buck in next week. They have performed in New York for the grand New Year bash organised by Sri Lankan society.

This is the second time in their thirty long years of musical career, had performed New Years Eve Celebration out of Sri Lanka.

They have performed in Taj Hotel Delhi in late eighties , where they were on contract for six months.

Rangum, Gayum-Talent Factory on Sirasa TV
"A Talent Factory- Rangum Gayum' is the newest programme on Sirasa TV. This new programme is dedicated exclusively for singing and dancing idols.

Titled " Rangum Gayum" it is exclusively for the youngsters, who want to sing and dance their cares away. The programme varies weekly to make it the ideal forum for those who excel in those two items.

Each contest will be limited to 3 minutes but they will be assisted from background by other singing dancing crazy guys and gals, who will be invariably motivated by the trio on the stage front. Each programme of 1/2 hrs duration, and variety ( life's spice) will be a speciality here. It is hoped to bring popular TV personalities weekly on to the stage to add colour. If these TV stars can sing a dance, they too will join those on stage. Their combination will dance and sing unceasingly sans a break, which sight is gonna be an unforgettable experience for young ones.

There will be 3 rounds and the compere will be a very popular lass " Ginger". She is a singing cum dancing maestro. She will briefly introduce first the programme and then the judges to the audience. Round One which we have titled ' your choice'

Here, the contestant will sing and dance to a selected song. After the trio's perfomance, the judging starlet will note the marks, but will not announce till end of the Round, which will take 7 minutes.

The 2nd Round will be called "Our Choice" The contestant will have to dance to a given tune, selected by the producers of the programme. This will go on for 5 miniutes only and supervised by the judges who will give marks.

The last Round (Round 3) is called " Non Stop" Have a minimum of 3 (songs) tunes(It could be more) with varying tunes will be played, where all three contestants will dance in music. Those in the background (of stage) will now join too. Then each contestant will come on stage and display his/her solo performance, depicting his/her maximum capability. Here the spectators will go waving mad, even the Judging star joining in the fun. This will go on for 7 minutes and you will find even the compere dancing with the whole lot of them.

Now it is time to announce the winner and tell the audience the Break-up of the points for the step rythem, variety as against menotony. expression, etc. Points will be assigned by another judge behind stage so that no injustice will be done to the contestants.

' Rangum Gayum' is on Friday at 7.30 pm on Sirasa TV.
