Massacre
of the innocents
The Inter-Club 'B' div. Provincial K.O. rugby tournament has reached
the semi-final stage. The Army 'Colts' take on CH 'Kabaragoyas'
in the first semi-final on Sept.2, while the Police 'Griffins' play
CR 'Bees', on Sept.5. Both games at Longdon Place.
Quite a number
of newcomers to the sport (clubs) scrummed down in this K.O. tournament
- Hambantota RFC, Matale RFC, Polgolla, Balangoda RFC. The four
clubs who will scrum down in the semis are leading rugby playing
teams from Western Province some of the seasoned players of yester-year
were playing for their respective clubs.
It should do
well that the Rugby Union's tournament committee bring in a ruling
that players, who have played a full season of 'A' rugby or national
players of recent past should not be allowed to play especially
against these provincial clubs (newcomers to the sport). Going by
the score sheets one finds that the Minnows to the game have lost
by a big margin, whilst confronting against 'B' div. Clubs from
the Western Province.
The controlling
body at least must restrict the number of players when playing against
these clubs, who strive to promote and develop the game at grassroots
level. In turn it will help the matches to be more competitive.
Otherwise its going to be a massacre of the innocents. But when
playing against their counterparts (W.P. clubs) there should be
no restrictions. Some of these clubs could field even two teams
in the top division as their cupboards are overflowing with youngsters
who are made to sit on the bench, as a result.
