Palanquin: Place for solitude
Situated within two kilometers from the city of Kandy towards Mahaiyawa, you can find the magnificent scenery of the pastoral hills of Kandy providing the perfect setting to relax. Designed to carry you into a new, warm, intimate world of hospitality, The Palanquin is an ideal get away from the stress of daily work.

Here, age-old traditions, the legacy of exquisite craftsmanship and other fine arts such as unique dance forms, blend easily with modern living to make your visit a memorable experience.

The Palanquin's atmosphere is soothing and you'll find your own little corner of the world among the hills. There are ten cosy and tastefully designed bed rooms with a large and well kept garden should you want some solitude. The 'a la carte' menu offers both western and eastern specialties to satisfy the most discerning palates.

The advantage at The Palanquin is that excursions to Kandy and its environs including places of archaeological significance are arranged by the hotel. The location is so inviting that within a few minutes you can arrive at the Victoria Golf Course or be on your way to Sigiriya.

But if you wish to stay in the city, Thambapanni is the ideal place to get away from the noise and dust of Kandy. Although it is placed round the Kandy Lake, its tranquil surroundings offer a cosy get away to spend that special occasion with your family.

Thambapanni offers a variety of traditional Sri Lankan cuisines together with a choice of Chinese, Indian and fast foods.

Both The Palanquin and Thambapanni are run by the well known Paivas restaurant management. Since 1936 when the cosy tea room of Paivas was put up, the restaurant has always been the 'meet and eat' place for everyone in Kandy.

In the 1940s Paivas became famous for its specialty mixed grill which attracted many customers. Later, Mr. Joe Paiva refurbished the restaurant to provide an elegant service for diners at 'Damians' pastry and take away shop, and at 'Shangrial Moghul' for authentic Indian tandoori chicken and Chinese cuisine.

The Paivas restaurant today offers banquet hall and air conditioned rooms, not forgetting the 'Night Kade' attraction for late night customers. This attraction includes koththu, hoppers, strings, etc.
