Miniature masterpieces
The art of growing miniature trees or Bonsai has become very popular in Sri Lanka in both towns and the suburbs. Members of the Bonsai Club of Sri Lankan have popularized the art by holding numerous workshops and exhibitions.

This year the club will hold its biennual exhibition on May 4th and 5th at the Art Gallery Colombo. On display at this exhibition will be a variety of Bonsai in different styles.
The art of Bonsai which first originated in China was developed as an art form in Japan. It has now spread worldwide and in Sri Lanka members of the Club work on the wide variety of tropical trees available such as the Ficus varieties, Malpighia, Bougainvillea, Tamarind, and many more to create miniatures of the large trees as they appear in nature.

The techniques used are the same as those used in Japan and involve systematic root and shoot pruning accompanied with a process of wiring. Flowers and fruits are also produced on these miniatures and the overall effect is an artistic masterpiece.
