Is intellectual property a moral right of the creator?
Noel Brian Ranasinghe of Kotte writes....
Can we have a hundred and one, claiming ownership to one's creative inventions? Can such intellectual property rights be bought over the counter ? Sold to others? If so, then what is the true value of one's own creation if it is to be subjected to such procedures?

Isn't intellectual property, a work of the mind, which is a moral right? Isn't a moral right inalienable? Can it be owned by others? The main copyright treaty was very specially constituted for the protection of the 'works' of all composers without any formality, or, conditional procedures regarding their 'rights', the treaty was ratified and accepted by all 'states' numbering about 150, pledging projection to such rights which all states owe them a special duty of care.

W.I.P.O. was established to administer the 'rights' of all creators protected under the various treaties, which was also part of the Affiliated Branches of the main body, and not to dictate to the intellectuals how to run their lives. Creators whose ''works'' are used and subjected to derogatory treatment are ordered to go it alone to defend their 'rights' in a Court of Law - they are refused any sort of help, or protection from those who pose off as their guardians. If this is the policy of such organisations, then we need not have a W.I.P.O., or any of its supporters dictating to us composers.

Such step-motherly treatment is uncalled for, this is sheer deceit, and double standards as far as the treaty is all about. Will W.I.P.O, or our very own N.I.P.O show will in what part of the main treaty that composers whose 'works' are pirated or subjected to any sort of derogatory treatment, must go it alone, to protect and defend such 'works' in a Court of Law? Come on, show it to me? This is how composers like me are treated, and the authorities do nothing at all to help the poor, weak, defenseless, like us, why must the creators (intellectuals) be dictated by others who make the rules to serve their own purpose?

The 'works' of a composer is subjected to rules, i.e., terms and conditions fixed by many forcing them to share equally with the lyric writers, sub lyric writers, arrangers, publishers and others, they are duped in many ways. Is this the main treaty is all about, or is it the rulings of the organisations??? What price justice? All "states" who have ratified and accepted the main copyright treaty, are in breach of their treaty obligations, and it is we, the creators, who suffer. Music begins with the composer, but, it is the rest, who benefit from their creations. When will the composers ever wake up? When will the state ever help us?

Why not Odysey
Viewers From Matara Writes...
The adventurous tales like 'Hercules' and 'Xena' now telecast on Sirasa T.V. and on Swaranawahini. Through these tales we learnt much about anicent Greece and its cluture, which were quite interesting. We are also interested in adventurous tales like "Odyssey". So we would be grateful if you could telecastmovies on 'Odyssey'

Well done MTV News & Live@ 8
Dr.Ranjith Hettiarachchi of Colombo-5 writes…
This is in response to a comment made a couple of weeks ago about the MTV News bulletine. Yes, I fully agree with the writer. Young Chevan Daniel has made a name for himself by keeping things simple, but totally professional. He has maintained his composure over a period of time which is, imaginably, hard to do. He has single handedly given the MTV News a fresh dimension, on par with any international news program.

Being an avid viewer of all the news broadcasts available to us, I rate the MTV News and Swarnavahini's Live @ 8 ahead of the others. Live@8 of course has a unique presentation style, which many appreciate. All in all, it's heartening to note that our channels are coming up with new and innovative methods of delivering news.

'Swarnabhimanaya 2002': The best commemorative ever on TV
Palitha Herath of Polgolla writes.....
A magnificent programme to commemorate the 6th Annivesary of Swarnavahini was aired on Saturday, March 16 ,2002. It was an utmost delight and I do not think anyone will disagree with me if I say that in the history of television in Sri Lanka, no programme what so ever could match the magnitude of Swarnabhimanaya 2002.

The magnanimous gesture of Nanda Malini and Amaradeva of appearing togethr on stage, I understand, is the first time that the duo has performed jointly for a live television audience. They too will be proud to know that the masses appreciate their commitment specially for a programme comparable to top class at international standards.

The entire programme was aired live within the cultural tringle at Anuradhapura. I appeal to the Cultual Ministry to have in their Archieves this programme which they could sell to foreigners as well as locals of archeological and cultural interests.

All songs aired on this day paid tribute to our eventful cultural heritage sung by famed artistes with discerning repute who would be treated as national treasures by the generations to come. All this was possible due to the unstinted efforts of the TV station Swarnavahini. We need to give its due place as the national TV of Sri Lanka for making Sri Lanks poud.

The people can jude for themselves as to why Swarnavahini deserves the national status. Look back, what they have given out in the recent past to gain knowledge by people of all ages with their special prgrammes on history, culture and relgion, bringing back the eventful heritage of our Nation apart form entertainment and Live @8 which they also excel from all other TV channels. You name any special day, Swarnavahini has something novel.

The credit should go to all at Swarnavahini including Nalin and Jackson, the great double capable of presenting any type of programme with complete and professional finesse.

Spectacular show
Sarala Kodagoda of Colombo writes....
The 'Swarnabhimanaya' show by Swarnavahini for their 6th anniversary was spectacular. The sets, the artistes, the choice of songs, the presenters and dance troupes were all splendid. We Sri Lankans are truly lucky to have enjoyed such an audio visual treat. Congratulations!!! Swarnavahini on such a superb show. The show was repeated on Sunday (17th) too but how about another telecast? I am sure the audience will enjoy it. Please consider it. Also I wish to congratulate Swarnavahini on their 6th anniversary and wish them all the luck for the future. You are the channel with a difference.
