  • The safest place

Each time I saw the Woodpecker at work,
    I remembered the deep incision
    Made with surgical precision...
    Imprinted in memory
The image of a surgeon's concentration,
    Wielding his gleaming scalpel,
A symbol of power and skill.

    Each morning this bird came
With its mate to the old tree...
Pecking the branch with its powerful beak,
    Like the surgeon's drill.
    The faithful mate kept watch,
    Until exhausted, both flew away.
    They took turns each day,
    Carving a deep hole
    Of ingenious symmetry
    A safe home for their
    Nestlings yet unborn.

    Independence

    You were my childhood pal,
    As we grew up
    We began to fly away
    Away from our nests.
    We always flew together.
    You ahead of me,
    Me ahead of you.

    Many said
    That you and I
    Were meant for each other
    For lifelong nesting.

    But to me, it seems
    A confinement,
    And nesting with you,
    ....Impossible....!
    As you are my friend,
    And my challenger,
I always wanted to overcome you
You always wanted to overcome me.

    Like a long railway
    Like two sturdy strong trees,
    Never, to be nesting together.

    - Lawanya Wijesekara

    Far away

    A couple of amateurs
    In search of nesting grounds
    Flew against the wind
    Without a moment's respite.
Found a crevice far atop a mountain
    That no predator could reach.
    With all the soft material
    Chosen from faraway lands
Set forth on their hearts' desire.
    In time there'll be eggs
    Then hatchlings too
    And many a sleepless night.
But when they flap their wings.
This wealth will surely be lost
    Stolen or otherwise
    From the cozy little nest
    Far atop the mountain
    That no predator could reach.

    Nesting on thoughts

    Nesting on the
    Leaves of my thoughts,
    A bird cried for aid
    I was helpless
    For I was just a plant;
    just a tender plant...
The bird flew away.... far away
    Leaving a song of sorrow
    Behind me....
But it's still nesting on the
    Leaves of my thoughts
    Failing to fly very far.

    My father bird!

One day a cuckoo bird was
    placed in a crow's nest
    And the father crow knew
    that it was not his
    Yet with no difference -
    Clutched it to him
He let the little bird be.
    After twenty years of love
    When this bird was told
    that it was not his
    He refused those thoughts
    Saying 'it belonged to him'.
    Mama bird was silent
Yet her tears proved her guilt.
    Father, I thank you.

    Home

    Hidden among tender green leaves,
    Amidst fragrant buds
    High up -
on the tip of a branch
    A cocoon of love
    Cradles the young
    In safety.
    No danger can come -
    No predator can reach it
    It sways to a rhythm
    On a gentle breeze,
    Rocking the young
    To a peaceful sleep,
    Taking them softly
    To the land of dreams.

    - Suchintha

    Graduation

    This nesting,
    this transit home,
    to which we added,
    lots of sticks,
    - making it firm
    though not comfortable
    is pushing us off today,
    to try our wings
    and to let in freshers
To push them off some day,
    from this nesting,
    this testing ground.

    - Malika Fernando

    Nesting

I was looking for the best place
    To build my nest
    I searched for it
    North, South, East and West.
In the hills and valleys and
    everywhere I guess
    I felt so tired and
    stopped for a rest
    Then I saw you
    Standing by my side
    Waiting patiently.
As I looked into your eyes
    The truth I did realize.
    Yes! I found the place!
    That's right here, with you.

    CLOTHES LINE

  • Why do women wear make-up?
  • Gift of friendship
  • Laugh and the world laughs with you
  • Why do women wear make-up?

Why do women have to wear make-up? As far as I'm concerned, every woman who does so is suffering from serious low self-esteem and insecurity problems.

Let's face it, every so called 'modern' woman wears make-up right? I guess it gives them a certain sense of security to be hiding behind layers of chemicals applied on their faces. But on the contrary, isn't it obvious that they are so totally insecure and unsure of themselves that they go to the extent of covering up their natural looks with various chemical concoctions, which incidentally, are tested on poor innocent animals before being released to the market. Another thing. You don't see us guys walking around with eye shadow and mascara on our faces now, do you? No, you don't. It's always been the female of our species who has been obsessed with make-up.My personal explanation for this phenomenon is that there is a genetic disorder in the female of our species that causes severe insecurity. But this is just a theory. I could be wrong. There could be another totally bizarre explanation for this scenario. Or is this one of those questions that could remain unanswered for the rest of eternity?

    Gift of friendship

    Friendship begins with little things
    Like a smile, a word, a deed
    Or a quick understanding
    Of another person's needs

It grows with every thoughtful act
    Each laugh or secret shared
    And all the little
    Acts of kindness shown

    Then, it blooms forever
in hearts like yours and mine.

Laugh and the world laughs with you

Have you ever wondered what happened to the "Laugh away the blues and soon the world will seem a much rosier place". Being one of "those people" who's had to swallow all those happy feelings with a grimace and a raised eyebrow, I just want to say 'please don't keep your laughter in check.'

What would a cheery smile cost you? Nothing except relaxing your facial muscles, and yet we guard it so closely that even an animal is bound to think it costs a fortune.

Are you one of those people who give a forced smile and the mechanical reply "I am fine" when someone asks you how you are? That is the most accepted reply, but now much better it would be if your face would brighten with a smile as you say "I am feeling absolutely wonderful".

Don't hold back, give into the giggles, the fun and the joy that is hidden away inside you. Feelings of joy sometimes get hidden behind our usual "Feeling miserable" attitude. Each time you smile, it has a positive effect on you as well as making others feel good at the same time.

I once knew a friend who made it a point of writing the word smile on every bedroom mirror and as she passed by she would give herself a great big grin.

It really helps. I've even tried it myself. It seems that our body can't tell the difference between a forced smile and a real one. It all adds up to the same result anyway.

Enjoying a good laugh releases hormones called endorphins which are the body's natural painkillers. These "feel good" hormones give your immune system a boost and help your cares melt away. It burns up the same amount of calories as 10 minutes of cycling.

The above information is from a magazine I read, but we don't need a magazine to tell us that we need to laugh. So next time you feel down, get together with some friends or go through a joke book, and even if it isn't funny, try laughing anyway. It will do you a world of good.
