Bloomfield poised to win

By Marlon Fernandopulle

Bloomfield were poised to clinch the Under 23 Championship after their medium pace bowlers Dhrshana Gamage and Tharanga Lakshita ripped the CCC batting apart to bowl them out for 107 in the final at Maitland Place yesterday.

Following the washout on Friday Bloomfield captain Sanjaya Rodrigo won the toss and invited CCC to take first lease of the wicket. The Maitland Crescent club started off badly losing both their openers Daminda Ranaweera and Jehan Mubaraq before their total reached double figures. From then onwards Bloomfield wrested control with Gamage and Lakshita claiming three wickets each and ripping the heart out of the CCC batting.Only Malintha Thotuwilage(27) and Nisal Randika(23) offered some resistance as CCC crashed to 107 all out.

Bloomfield were given a solid start with openers Ian Daniel (40 n.o) and Chaminda Ruwan (22) putting on 49 for the first wicket. Although they lost the wickets of Ruwan and skipper Sanjaya Rodrigo in quick succession Bloomfield worked their way to be 87 for 2 wickets and heading towards an easy first innings win when bad light stopped play at 6.10 p m.

Sri Lanka rattle Pakistan

From Daminda Wijesuriya in Sharjah

Sharjah, United Arab Emirates, Sunday - Sri Lanka cantered to a seven wickets win over Pakistan in 38.1 overs in the second match of the Champions Trophy Cricket Tournament in Sharjah yesterday.

This was also Sri Lanka's second win in the tournament having beaten Zimbabwe comprehensively on the first day of the contest on Friday.

Avishka Gunewardena led the run hunt with a not so impressive 88 and when he just about seemed set to score his century he was caught smartly by Sohaib Malik off the bowling of Akhtar for 88. Avishka gave three chances and his knock was not all that good to write home about.

However with Avishka's dismissal it was left to Mahela Jayawardena and and Russel Arnold to get the winning runs which they did without much fuss. At the close Mahela Jayawardena was unbeaten on 29 while Russel Arnold was unbeaten on 10.

One really cannot take the shine off Pakistan for this defeat as they fielded a full strength bowling attack with even Wasim Akram being in the line-up. However they have not figured in any international games for about three months.

However it was felt that the score of 176 that they put up was not quite sufficient to make a match of it.

By virtue of the fact that Sri Lanka won the game in 38.1 overs, well within the 50 overs gives Sri Lanka bonus points which should hold them in good stead in the contest.

Pakistan won the toss and elected to bat but they never accounted for Sri Lanka's new bowler Nissanka who gave them a torrid time. At the same time Nissanka took two wickets - that of Younis Khan and Rashid Latiff.

But it was the tall and powerfully built Dilhara Fernando who, he seems to have wider shoulders now, generated a lot of pace on the Sharjah turf. Dilhara was the best bowler claiming three for 43.

Pakistan found run making a difficulty and with the greatest effort they managed to take their score to 176 in 56.6 overs with Yousuf Youhana being the highest scorer with 47.

Muralitharan, Sri Lanka's ace spinner, was not at his usual best but even though he claimed the wicket of Abdur Razzaq just when the Pakistani batsman was settling down for a good score. Skipper Sanath Jayasuriya as usual gave good support by claiming three wickets - that of Yousuf Youhana, Wasim Akram and Waqar Younis.
