Colours of nature

Chitral Jayatilake is no stranger to wildlife enthusiasts, his photographs having appeared in many books on wildlife and biodiversity conservation. An ardent nature buff, he has for the past twenty years spent most of his spare time in the wild, photographing the beauties of the country's rich fauna and flora.

Chitral's forthcoming exhibition ' Colours of Nature' to be held at the Harold Pieris Gallery of the Lionel Wendt from September 7-9 will give nature lovers who do not have the opportunity to travel as extensively as he does, a chance to see up close, sights they long for. The elusive glimpse of a shy bear on a tree, the baby elephant peering at the world from the shelter of its mother (on our cover this week) and a lazy leopard lounging by the wayside.

His photographs are no doubt, the result of hours of patient expertise, but given Chitral's great love of the jungles, it is no surprise that he has been able to capture so much of significance. He admits that even after many years his attraction for the Dry Zone jungles has never waned. And this is what he would like to share through the exhibition.

An airline executive by profession, Chitral has won several awards for his photography, notably the 1st prize for the best colour photograph at the fourth Festival of Wildlife Photography held by the Department of Wildlife Conservation. He received this award from the Duke of Edinburgh. More recently in 1996, Chitral won first place in the Centenary Photographic Exhibition conducted by the Wildlife and Nature Protection Society and last year, second prize in a wildlife photography contest held by the Dept. of Wildlife Conservation.

Michael rocks the world

Michael Jackson will release his new album on October 30. It will be his first since 'Dangerous' was released ten years ago, in 1991. In the UK though, Michael's new album will be released a day earlier, on October 29.

Meanwhile, the 43-year-old singer's debut single from the forthcoming untitled album has premiered on US radio. The single 'You Rock My World' is now receiving extensive coverage and airplay. It was originally due to be premiered on August 28, but due to pressure and interest by the media 'You Rock My World' was premiered ahead of schedule.

For a second week the group Five has managed to hold on to the No. 1 position on the UK singles chart. The hit song 'Let's Dance' has managed to hold on at a time there is a lull in sales as it is the tail-end of summer.

Meanwhile Five's reign of the singles chart may only last this week as there are big releases from likes of Kylie Minogue, Victoria Beckham, Emma Bunton, Robbie Williams and Michael Jackson.

Nelly Furtado, the half-Canadian, half-Portuguese singer has the best selling new entry of the week. The 22-year-old's track 'Turn Off The Light', debuted at No 4. It follows her hit 'I'm Like A Bird', which peaked at No. 5 in May. 'Turn Off The Light' has performed better chart-wise though the former hit remains her best to date. Backed by a very good video and good vocal skills- it reflects Nelly's potential. She sang at the post Grammy Awards party of Sir Elton John which she described as the most defining moment of her life. Both Nelly's singles are taken from her album 'Whoah Nelly'.

A song that failed to hit the Top 20 last year has made it almost a year on. 'Hide U' checks in at No. 6 for Kosheen. The Bristol-based trio comprising Markee Substance, Darren Decorder and Sian Evans received support from two New York producers John Creamer and Stephane who transformed the song retaining the drum bass to make it the hit it is today.

The US heavy metal band Metallica is to sue a Californian firm called MHT Luxury Alloys for producing wheels called "The Metallica." The band which is very protective of its name wants the offending firm to recall the wheels which it sold from its customers and enter into a settlement or face a lawsuit. Metallica's lawyer says the band is now into the automative industry and has started selling Metallica tyre wheel covers.
