Ding-dong battle over cool stack

A story that often did the rounds among defence suppliers is how some, including those in uniform, who made big money were unable to live it up with their ill gotten gains.

There were Kommis Kaakkas facing criminal action for their misdemeanors whilst others were facing costly personal problems. Yet there were quite a few exceptions too. That was for those who had an exceptionally good vision, not only to rake in the billions, but also to stack them under various names. Now comes the story of how one lucky man stacked away his fortunes with a sister-in-law in cooler climes of an European country.

Mother luck has not been all that kind to him. The brother has now divorced his wife. The lady has inherited the fortune. A ding dong battle is now under way.

Fraud at the top?

A Captain in the Sri Lanka Navy's Logistics Division has been interdicted over an alleged Rs 1.6 million fraud. A top level investigation is now under way.

Costly affair

Here is a poser for Army top brass. The man of not so higher ranks not only enjoys a bigger personal security team to look after him and his family, but three times a day, a vehicle makes a 40 mile trek up and down from his house in the city suburbs to the camp. That is to bring breakfast, lunch and dinner. Costly security and costly meals too !!

Not flights of peace

President Chandrika Bandaranaike Kumaratunga left Thursday to Britain on a private visit.

It was only on Friday night that the leader of the Opposition Ranil Wickremesinghe left for Norway.

Although there was speculation in some political quarters the visits were connected to the ongoing peace efforts by Norway, they were not in any way related.

Variety of Tigers

An official Defence Ministry press release on Wednesday announcing a four days and six hour truce in the fighting on account of Sinhala and Hindu New Year makes an interesting disclosure.

The Ministry says "it has been decided to release ten (10) LTTE cadres presently under arrest" and goes on to give the names.

At least judging by the names, the LTTE is a multi ethnic guerrilla group though its majority are made up of Tamils. According to the MoD, six Tamils, two Sinhalese and Two Muslims are being released. A good character certificate indeed from the MoD to the LTTE.
