By M. Shamil Amit
Ananda Sastralaya Kotte had the honour of producing the first result in a big match this season when they defeated St John's Nugegoda by an innings and three runs in the 11th annual big match which ended at the P.Sara Stadium yesterday.

Suranga dazzles
By Sanath Weerasuriya
Suranga de Silva, the vice captain of the St. Sebastian's College, Moratuwa has became the very first Sri Lanka schoolboy to score golden 1000 runs in a three consecutive year. He established this new school record last week, when he played his 17th match for the 2000/2001 season. Suranga's average for the current season is 48.09 in 21 innings. Also he recorded the average of 50.00 in 1990/2000 season (1051 runs) and 41.2 in the 1998/1999 season with 1026 runs. Talented, capable but mysteriously 'discarded' from the touring Under 19 team, Suranga is the only school cricketer to milestone........ Suranga would have reached his third milestone this year before the 'Big Match' if not for his missing two matches due to trials for the Sri Lankan Under 19 pool. But it was a waste of time for him. Suranga is also a capable right arm off break bowler. He bagged 20 wickets in average for all three seasons. He is an excellent fielder specially within the circle. He scored a brilliant 135 at the Battle of The Gold and annexed the Best Fielder Trophy. Suranga scored half centuries against Nalanda and St. Anthony's Wattala in all three seasons. Two seasons consecutively half centuries against St. Sylvester, DS, Thurstan and St. Joseph's Colombo. Suranga's Centuries for 2000/2001:-135 Vs De Mazenod; 135 Vs Prince of Wales. Half Centuries:- 77 Vs Trinity; 69 Vs Sri Jayawardenapura; 54 Vs St. Anthony's Wattala; 65 Vs Nalanda; 61 Vs Wesley; 70 Vs Thurstan.
