Khobhala Sirisoma, Sri Lanka's national billiards champion, failed to make it to the quarter-finals of the World Billiards Championships in Middlesborough in England losing to Geeth Sethi of India by 8 frames to 1.

Earlier Sirisoma showed promise by winning three out of his four matches.

Square peg in a round hole

Dishonesty, hoodwinking and cheating has started eating like a cancer into the sports of schools today in this country. The biggest perpetrators are not the students, but the masters themselves.

On November 11 Hameediya Maha Vidyalaya played S. Thomas' Prep School, Kollupitiya in an under-16 Milo Trophy soccer match at Price Park. When the Thomian side went to the venue at 9.00 am., they were in for a rude shock.

No goal posts had been put up, no flag poles and the ground authorities knew nothing about the fixture. The game was due to start at 9.30. The game finally got underway at 10.25. The coach and master-in-charge of the Thomian team, Gratien Amarasinghe, noticed that the referee was not attired in the specified referee's uniform and when he inquired from the master-in-charge of the host school, whether he was from the Referees'Association, he was answered in the affirmative. However, Amarasinghe's suspicions had been aroused and later he found out from the referee himself that he was not sent by the Referees' Association. But was asked by the master-in-charge of Hameediya Maha Vidyalaya to blow for this match.

Amarasinghe promptly ordered the Thomian side off the field and has now lodged a complaint with M. Farook, the Tournament Secretary, to hold an inquiry into the matter. - BM

Suwan Selvaratnam takes National Stroke Play title

By Tita Nathanielsz
The young and the not so young battled tenaciously for silver in the National Stroke Play Golf Championships organized by the Sri Lanka Ladies Golf Union at the Ridgeways of the Royal Colombo Golf Club. The young fell by the wayside making way for two seniors and Ex-Sri Lanka National title holders Suwan Selvaratnam and 'Duchess' Yvonne Abhayaratne to take the honours.

Suwan Selvaratnam was the best and she took the title with 252 strokes averaging 84 per round. 'Duchess' Abhayaratne came 2nd with 261 strokes averaging 87. Suwan Selvaratnam is now our National Stroke Play Champion and takes Silver leaving flowers for Yvonne.

Special Awards
In the Silver division there were a few specials for noteworthy performances each day. On the first day Yvonne Abhayaratne was recognized for her gross 84. On the 2nd day Niloo Jayatilleke outmatched her competitors with an excellent 81 and on the last day Suwan Selvar-atnam came in with 83.
Anysa Outstanding
In the competition for nett scores teenager Anysa Diaz a bright new spark was exceptionally smart in her chase after the Nuwara Golf Club Trophy. Her aggregate 197 nett was great considering that she is comparatively new to the game. Her praiseworthy scores each day were 66, 63 and 68. Maestro Willie Barsenbach volunteers that she is a tremendous player with encouraging potential and I have no reason to doubt the man's judgement. Meantime Papa Pat Diaz was beaming all day basking in the glory of his daughter's victory. Fran de Mel came 2nd to Anysa Diaz 20 strokes behind.
Nett Scores
In an entirely different and independent competition prizes were awarded for best nett scores each day and those who strolled to collect their prizes at the award ceremony were Y. S. Jung 74, Usha de Silva 72 and B. Kopp 74.
Sponsors
Mackwoods Ltd. who have been sponsoring this competition for over half a century were once again lavish and very supportive. Mrs. Sriyani Nonis the charming lady who chairs the Company with skill and acumen was Chief Guest at the Award Ceremony preceding the lunch at the Club House. Much credit to irrepressible Anne Captain who dovetailed all the arrangements to end blemish free. A great event superbly organized and the Ladies took a bow.
