Chairman Ranjith Fernando is not exactly correct in saying Sri Lanka needs a national carrier as tourism is an important component of our income generation and the national carrier is responsible for the carriage of 30% - 40% of tourists. The entire Maldivian economy is dependant on tourism and the industry is successful without a national carrier. Similarly, "no other airline will help our country to bring tourists" is incorrect. Even now. other airlines are carrying the balance 60% - 70% tourists visiting Sri Lanka. A good example is; despite discontinuation of flights to France, Germany, and Italy, as per SL Tourism statistics, arrivals from those countries to Sri Lanka have shown a healthy YoY growth since the withdrawal of flights. Thay are carrier by other airlines.
