Stopping the carnage on Sri Lanka's highways

E-mail Print PDF

I had just returned from Sri Lanka after attending the Thurstan College vs. Isipathana College 50th big match encounter at the SSC cricket grounds. I spent 11 memorable days in Colombo and Galle with my schoolmates of both schools, whom I met after some considerable time.

During my visit, I noticed a substantial improvement to road infrastructure largely thanks to Defence Secretary Gotabaya Rajapaksa’s vision for better roads for the future. I agree with the Defence Secretary’s courage to rebuild Colombo in line with other larger cities in the world.

In the past, Colombo was a well-planned city until R. Premadasa became the Prime Minister of the country. He changed the whole planning procedure that had existed within the City of Colombo since the times of the British Raj to accommodate his henchman and party supporters, and built unauthorised structures all over Colombo. He and his henchmen politicised the administration of the Town Hall and that legacy continued for 40 years until recently.

Amusing name boards

E-mail Print PDF

In recent times Colombo has experienced an increase in the use of unusual and sometimes bizarre name boards in its retail and restaurant outlets, as a marketing tool to enhance customer attention.

A striking example is the ‘Al-Jazeera Arabic Restaurant’, a tiny food outlet in the corner of Deen’s Road, Maradana taken from the name of the Qatari media giant Al Jazeera broadcasting.

‘Al Jazeera’s’ Maradana branch does indeed house a small television and one could assume that ravenous passers- by are munching into its signature chicken burgers and catching up on its ‘parent company’s’ latest news coverage.

Yet despite the hilarity of such names, from a marketing paradigm there is a rationale behind the adoption of brand names that hold significant high-end brand recognition.

Destination tourism next step for Sri Lanka

E-mail Print PDF

Destination tourism is the next, obvious step for the local events sector, and maybe even businesses associated with hospitality and tourism, and Sri Lankan tourism authorities should acknowledge opportunities in this arena by at least having a strategy this area, says Seniya Samarasekera, Founder / Managing Director of AV Productions, an audio and visual equipment supplier to the local events industry since 1992.

This 20-year veteran of Sri Lanka’s events industry has, himself, put together a project so his company would be able to branch out into the destination tourism field via a large scale exposition (expo) centre, which would also feature conference halls, restaurants, etc., all under one roof.

In addition, separate to this project, he also expects to also open a local boutique hotel to offer accommodations to visitors at this expo centre, and has, so far, identified land for the overall project and gotten the government’s blessing. All that is missing, comments Mr. Samarasekera, is the full sign off by his private investor, a foreign events company with which he is tying up to do more state-of-the-art events. Ultimately, he anticipates that, not only will this entire project get underway soon; it will be completed within two to three years. All told, this conference venue, and its in-built facilities, will likely have the capacity to host events encompassing between 4,000 and 5,000 conference-goers.

SINGAPORE – Most passengers travelling in low-cost carriers seldom get the opportunity to enjoy first class privileges both at the airport and on-board, but the ‘tigerPLUS’ facility by Tiger Airways gives a chance to all its passengers to enjoy business/first class lounge and priority check-in boarding facilities at Singapore’s Changi Airport.

Established in 2004, Tiger Airways is one of Asia’s leading low-cost carriers with over 28 million passengers booking flights on Tiger Airways. The airline has been in operation in Sri Lanka for a year with four flights per week and starting at Rs.10,750 from Colombo to Singapore and low-cost travel to many other destinations.

tigerPLUS facilities are presently available for flights departing from Singapore and by paying an additional 48 Singapore dollars (Sri Lankan Rs.4800), passengers can enjoy exclusive privileges such as access to SATS Premier Lounge, usually used by first class/business class passengers of international airlines.
