‘Sudu Seeya’ found strangled on beach

A so-called divine healer, dabbling in witch craft was found strangled on a beach at Akkaraipattu yesterday, some six weeks after he was abducted from his residence at Ragama, police said today.

They said that Mohamed Niyaz, also known as ‘Sudu Seeya’, had on his person some Rs. three million worth of gold on the night he was abducted.

According to police there were several burn marks on the victim that suggests that the man had been tortured before been done to death.

The man who practiced witch craft both here and overseas is believed to have earned millions of rupees from his clients in return for divine favours.

However there are also allegations that the victim had also maintained links with local drug cartels, according to police.

 

10 Sri Lankan fishermen arrested in India

 Ten Sri Lankan fishermen, were arrested on charges of violating sea perimeters by Coast Guard officials in India, The Times of India reported.

The newspaper reported that the fishermen were in two boats carrying 600 kg of fish had been nabbed during surveillance along the eastern seaboard by coast guard ship Sarang on November 22.

"The boats were spotted 126 nautical miles off Nagayalanka near Machilipatnam in Andhra Pardesh. Initially we warned them and asked to go back. But later, we found they had been in Indian waters for more than a week," a senior coast guard officer told TOI.

Horror stories in Galle and Matara

Rumor mongers were spreading panic in the southern coastal town of Galle and Matara suggesting that a cyclone was set to lash the area, when the atmosphere was only clouded with gale-force winds, an official warned a short while ago.

Additional Director with the Disaster Management Centre (DMC) Pradeep Kodippilli said that such scare rumors had already taken effect with hundreds of fear-stricken people spilling out of their homes in a bid to reach safer places.

"This is not the case. The Meteorology Department is convinced that the present weather pattern is confined to strong winds in the area which has uprooted some trees and damaged a few houses. Apart from that, no other serious damage or loss to life has been reported so far", he said.

 

Boy dies during pigeon hunt

A 14-year-old boy was killed on the spot after he fell off a three storey building inside a temple premises at Nattandiya shortly before dusk on Thursday, police said today.

They said the victim along with two other boys of the same age had ventured on to the building on a pigeon hunt when the incident took place.

The victim was identified as J. M. Sandun Dilshan, a student of President’s College in Nattandiya.

The Marawila police are conducting further investigations.

 

Two missing as flood waters rise

Two persons were reported missing without a trace in surging flood waters at Moneragala and Anuradhapura during the past 24 hours, an official with the Disaster Management Centre (DMC) said a short while ago.

DMC spokesperson, Pradeep Kodippilli said that the two persons were believed to have been swept away in swirling waters while attempting to cross water ways in those two areas.

He added that the sluice gates at the Weragala Tank in Moneragala and the Nochiyaduwa Tank in Anrudhapura were opened earlier this morning to ease the water flow.

Apart from that some 29, families are reported to have been displaced in the Batticaloa District since early this week owing to heavy rains that had inundated their homes.
