Businessman remanded over container of illegally imported items

A garment industry businessman was remanded today after the Customs detected a container of illegally imported items including shoes and clothing valued at over Rs 40 million,  Director Revenue Task Force (RTF) Mali Piyasena said.

He said he had declared that the container was carrying raw material  required for the garment industry.

He is a resident of Colombo 5.

Hotline for public complaints: Mervyn

Minister of Public Relations and Public Affairs, Mervin Silva, said today (22) that the ministry has decided to introduce a new hotline to which the public can make their complaints to.

Further explaining the ministry secretary, H. P. Cashian Herath, said that operators who can communicate in three languages will be at work to take in every compliant.

“For this we are going to introduce three hotlines and through this people can make their complaints and ministry will solve the problem responsibly and call the relevant person back saying that they have solved his/her issue,”he said.

 

French naval ship “Jacoues Cartier” arrives in Colombo port

French naval ship “Jacoues Cartier” arrived in Colombo port on Wednesday (22) on a goodwill visit, navy said. 
 
“Jacoues Cartier” is a Landing Ship Tank with a displacement of 1,330 tons. It is 80 meters in length and has a complement of 56 naval personnel onboard. The visiting French ship will stay in the country till May 26.

Ship’s Commanding Officer, Lieutenant Commander Amaury Moreau De Bellaing paid a courtesy call on Commander Western naval area, Rear Admiral Sirimevan Ranasinghe at the Western naval command headquarters today.
 

‘flydubai’ begins flights to Mattala

‘flydubai’, Dubai's low-cost airline, began flights to Mattala Rajapaksa international Airport at Mattala today (Wednesday) , officials of Jetwing Air , Sri Lankan general sales agent of  ‘flydubai’ said.
 
‘flydubai’operates flights to Mattala three-times a week on Monday, Wednesday and  Friday from today and daily from June 3, General Manager of Jetwing Air J.D.Wieman told Times Online.
He expressed optimism that the number of passengers from Mattala will increase within the next few months, although the bulk of passengers is from Colombo currently.  There will be a demand for ‘flydubai’ flights from the North, East and South with the popularity of the airline and additional flights are in response to anticipated passenger demand in the near future, he added.
“From today we operate 10 flights from Colombo to Dubai and three out of it via Mattala” Sales Manager Jetwing Air (flydubai) Suren Balsuriya revealed. "The total number of weekly flights would go up to 14 and out of it 7 will be via Mattala from June 3," he added.
 
More than 30 per cent of ‘flydubai's’ total passenger traffic to Sri Lanka in 2012 was connecting traffic from the Central and Eastern Europe (CEE) and the Commonwealth of Independent States (CIS) regions and the Middle Eastern countries. (Bandula)
