A group of 85 persons attempting to leave the country illegally for Australia were rounded up some 60 nautical miles off the Galle Coast, a senior naval official said.

He said the group included 75 males, six children and four females. They are residents in the north and east of the country, he said.

The detection comes around the same time 14 Sri Lankans who had sought asylum in Australia were returning to the country after they refused to be put on an island pending for refugee processing.
