Fiheries minister hope to resolve fishermen problem through dialogues

11 September 2015 - 25   - 0

Sri Lanka expects the "contentious" issue of fishing by Indian [Tamil Nadu] fishermen in Sri Lankan waters to be resolved without “harming” its friendly relationship with India, according to Mahinda Amaraweera, Fisheries Minister.

Mr. Amaraweera, who formally assumed charge as the Minister on Tuesday, said though the Indian fishermen were carrying out fishing in his country’s waters for “over 50-60 years,” it was “only now” that this had become a “prominent topic” of discussion. Emphasising the need for resolving the issue at diplomatic level, the Minister, who was elected to Parliament from the Hambantota electoral district on the ticket of the United People’s Freedom Alliance (UPFA), said his Ministry had discussed the issue several times with the Indian High Commission on “very cordial terms” and appreciated “cooperation and interest” of the Indian government.
