Public washrooms have been set-up at seven railway stations after a proposal had been submitted to that effect in this year's budget, the Finance Ministry said in a statement.

The construction of public washrooms at railway stations in Polgahawela, Rambukkana, Hatton, Puttalam, Chilaw, Trincomalee and Batticaloa have been completed, the statement read.

In addition, washrooms are under construction in the Kadugannawa, Peradeniya and Ja-Ela railway stations. Each washroom is being built at a cost of Rs 9.3 million and is equipped with special facilities for differently-abled persons.

The government had allocated Rs 1 billion to upgrade sanitary facilities at bus terminals and train stations in the annual budget.
