The dumping of garbage at the sanitary landfill in Aruwakkalu, Puttalam has been temporarily suspended following the recent explosion at the site, Megapolis Ministry Secretary Nihal Rupasinghe said.

Mr. Rupasinghe said a team of specialists including officials from the Government Analyst's Department will carry out an investigation into the explosion, starting from today (Oct 9) as such the dumping of garbage has been temporarily halted.

Issuing a statement, the Megapolis Ministry said that the explosion had occurred this Monday in a Regulation Tank, where leachate from garbage is collected.

Residents of Aruwakkalu have repeatedly protested against the government’s decision to dump garbage from Colombo at the landfill, citing health concerns.
