Update : Police Chief Pujith Jayasundara and former Defence Secretary Hemasiri Fernando have been remanded until October 18 upon orders issued by the Colombo Chief Magistrate's court.

Chief Magistrate Lanka Jayaratne had issued the order after considering the Colombo High Court's decision to overturn the bail request granted by the Colombo Chief Magistrate's court.

Jayasundara and Fernando have been charged by the Attorney General (AG) for their failure to prevent the Easter Sunday attacks despite having prior information on the incident.

The Colombo High Court had ordered the arrest of Jayasundara, and Fernando after considering a revision petition filed by the AG against the Chief Magistrate's decision to release the suspects on bail.

UPDATE : Pujith, Hemasiri arrested

Police Chief Pujith Jayasundara and former Defence Secretary Hemasiri Fernando have been arrested by prison officials after a court order had been issued to that effect today (Oct 9).

They are being taken to the Welikada prison to be placed under remand custody.

The Colombo High Court today ordered the arrest of Jayasundara and Fernando, revoking a previous court order to release them on bail after they had been charged by the Attorney General over their failure to prevent the Easter Sunday attacks.

Court orders arrest of Pujith, Hemasiri

The Colombo High Court today revoked a court order to release IGP Pujith Jayasundara and former Defence Secretary Hemasiri Fernando on bail, and ordered their arrest today (Oct 9).

Previously, IGP Jayasundara and Mr Fernando had been granted bail after the Attorney General (AG) had charged them over their failure to prevent the Easter Sunday attacks.

Colombo Chief Magistrate Lanka Jayaratne had released the suspects on bail, citing lack of evidence to support certain charges against the suspects, which included murder.

However, the AG had appealed against the decision through a revision petition at the Colombo High Court. The order concerning the petition was announced by High Court judge Vikum Kaluarachchi today.
