Teachers, Principals unions threaten strike on Sept 26 and 27

Thirty unions comprising teachers and principals have threatened to engage in a strike on September 26 and 27 citing several long-standing issues.

Ceylon Teachers Services Union (CTSU) General Secretary Mahinda Jayasinghe said that the strike would be based on salary anomalies and the excessive unnecessary workload for teachers and principals.

Unions engaged in a one-day token strike in March this year over similar reasons but have failed to achieve their demands.

Accordingly, the CTSU General Secretary said that teachers and principals would also take part in a protest opposite the Fort Railway Station on September 26.

He noted that they would reconsider the decision to go on strike if the authorities provide a feasible solution to their issues by this Sunday.
