AG says appearing before PSC is at my discretion : President

11 September 2019 - 117   - 0

President Maithripala Sirisena today (Sept 11) said the Attorney General had informed him that appearing before the Parliamentary Select Committee probing the Easter Sunday attacks was at his discretion.

Addressing a meeting of the Sectoral Oversight Committee (SOC) on National Security, the President said that he would, however, take a decision in the best interests of national security and as an individual who respects democracy.

The PSC had sent a letter to the President in mid-August asking him to give a date convenient for him to testify before the Committee.

Issuing a statement, the President's Office said Mr. Sirisena had also instructed the SOC to expedite the process of amending and imposing laws to prevent terrorism.

He had emphasized that any decisions pertaining to national security must be taken without delay and that a similar tragedy such as the Easter Sunday attacks must not occur in the future.
