Update : Ex-Sathosa General Manager Vimal Perera granted bail

Update: Former Sathosa General Manager Vimal Perera who was convicted over a corruption case has been granted bail today (Aug 20).

Perera had been sentenced to a year in prison and was also imposed a Rs 50,000 fine by the Colombo Chief Magistrate's court today.

However, he had been released on a surety bail of Rs 300,000 after his lawyers had informed court that they would be appealing the sentence.

Perera had been accused of importing 1000 metric tonnes of rice over the maximum purchasing rate thereby causing losses worth Rs 4 million to state-owned retailer Sathosa.


Ex-Sathosa General Manager Vimal Perera sentenced to a year in prison over corruption case

Former Sathosa General Manager Vimal Perera has been sentenced to a year of imprisonment after being convicted of corruption charges today (Aug 20).

During today's hearing, Chief Magistrate Lanka Jayaratne ordered the suspect to pay a fine of Rs 50,000 over the offence failing which he would be sentenced to an additional six months in prison.

Perera had been accused of importing 1000 metric tonnes of rice over the maximum purchasing rate thereby causing losses worth Rs 4 million to state-owned retailer Sathosa.

Court was informed that the accused had previously served as a lecturer at the Colombo University.
