Measures are to be taken against illegal settlements on the banks of the Nilwala river and those involved in polluting it, Deputy Minister Buddhika Pathirana said yesterday (Aug 19).

The Deputy Minister of Industry and Commerce had made this remark during an inspection tour in the river along with other state officers. He had also called for a report based on the findings of the tour.

During the tour, Mr. Pathirana had urged the need to prevent the pollution of the Nilawala river between Matara and Akuressa since it caters to more than 800,000 persons living in those areas.

Officials of the Central Enviornment Authority, Urban Development Authority, police and the Matara district development committee accompanied the deputy minister during the inspection.

They had observed sand mining and reclamation activities taking place in the area along with the disposal of industrial and household waste into the river.
