OMP to set up third regional office in Jaffna this month

The Office on Missing Persons (OMP) is set to open its third regional office in Jaffna on Aug 24, OMP announced in a press release issued today (Aug 16).

"The OMP has a primary mandate to search for and trace the fate and whereabouts of missing and disappeared persons in Sri Lanka," OMP Chairperson Saliya Peiris said.

At present, the OMP has its regional offices in Matara and Mannar.

These offices would be tasked with accepting complains of missing persons, following up with district-level state authorities on administrative issues faced by families, and carrying out inquiries on individual cases.

Peiris, a President's Counsel, noted that the establishment of the OMP recognizes the state's responsibility over the "thousands of affected citizens" who have been victims to disappearances over the last four decades.
