The Supreme Court today (Jul 22) announced that the fundamental rights petition filed by Dr Mohamed Shafi, who was remanded over multiple charges, would be taken up on August 6.

Deputy Solicitor General Thusith Mudalige, appearing for the Attorney General (AG) who is a respondent to the petition, said that other respondents have not been issued notice to appear before court so far.

Accordingly, the Supreme Court instructed the petitioner to serve notices on the respondents to appear before court during the next hearing of the case.

Dr Shafi, who has been remanded upon orders by the Kurunegala Magistrate’s court, argued that the charges against him were false and baseless. He has been accused of multiple charges involving terrorism, money laundering, and the sterilization of mothers.

The Criminal Investigations Department (CID) has informed the Kurunegala Magistrate’s court that sufficient evidence has not been found to prove the charges against the suspect so far.

Defence Secretary Yasantha Kodagoda, Attorney General Dappula de Livera, Acting IGP C. Wickremaratne, Kurunegala OIC (Crimes)  Pushpalal, the Kurunegala OIC, Kurunegala DIG Kithsiri Jayalath, and CID Director Shani Abeyasekara have been named as respondents to the petition.
