The National Dengue Control Unit (NDCU) has decided to introduce an islandwide ‘dengue prevention hour’ on Fridays until August 31, Consultant Physician Dr. Prashila Samaraweera said.

This programme would be launched in a bid to curb the spread of dengue as 40 lives have already been lost so far, with some 28,000 cases reported across the country.

Clean-up programmes will take place during this hour at state-run bodies, Dr Samaraweera noted adding that health officials including Public Health Inspector (PHI)’s will take part in the clean-up process.

According to the NDCU, Colombo had shown a sharp increase in dengue patients when compared to last year, with figures standing as high as 6000. Gampaha and Kalutara came in second and third with tolls standing at 3700 and 2400 respectively.
