The total number of people hit by the drought stands at more than 565,000, the Disaster Management Centre (DMC) said today (Jul 12).

According to the DMC, the prevailing drought has extended across 18 districts including the North, North Central, North Western, and Eastern provinces.

In a bid to alleviate the living conditions of these people, steps have been taken to distribute 1300 water bowsers and 800 water tanks across these areas, the disaster management body said.

The general public has also been requested to support these initiatives by providing water tanks or bottled water for the drought-affected residents. Those willing to do so could contact the DMC on the following numbers: 117 / 112 136 136 / 112 136 222 / 112 670 002
