PM requests for reduction in aircraft landing charges to attract more tourist flights

Prime Minister Ranil Wickremesinghe has requested civil aviation and treasury authorities to reduce landing charges levied on aircrafts touching down in Sri Lanka.

The Prime Minister had made this request during a meeting with tourism, civil aviation and treasury authorities this morning, the Prime Minister's office said.

Treasury Secretary Dr R.H.S. Samaratunga, the Immigration and Emigration Department's Controller General, and Airport & Aviation Services Dammika Ranatunga were among the officials who attended the meeting.

Tourism, which accounts for 5% of Sri Lanka’s GDP, tanked following the April 21 attacks. However, to lure tourists back, Sri Lanka is hosting international events and has relaxed rules on minimum rates for hotel stays.

Further hotels have slashed room rates with free airport pickups in anticipation of the recovery in the industry to pick up.
