A three day regional technical training workshop on "Effective prevention and intervention of the use of internet and Social Media by young Adults for Terrorist recruitment in South Asia" is being conducted by the United Nations Office of Drugs and Crime (UNODC) in Maldives today (June 18).

The workshop organised in partnership with the National Counter-terrorism Center - Maldives (NTCTM) and a Maldivian telecommunications company brings together 33 law enforcement practitioners and investigators from Bangladesh, Sri Lanka and the Maldives aimed at strengthening their investigative and analytical skills, the NCTCM said in a Twitter post.

The workshop comes weeks after a tripartite regional intelligence coordination effort dubbed the 'Three Eyes' saw, Indian, Sri Lankan and Maldives intelligence practitioners meet for a close door discussion in Colombo.

Counter Terrorism was high on the agenda of Indian PM Narendra Modi, during his first visits to Maldives and Sri Lanka since his re-election to office. Sri Lanka and Maldives have been actively seeking to enhance intelligence sharing and counter terrorism coordination.

Last week the National Investigation Agency (NIA) of India raided several properties in Coimbatore in Tamil Nadu and arrested one individual for having close links with the Easter Sunday terrorist bomber Zaharan. Further investigations are ongoing, the NIA said in a press release.
