Moratuwa Mayor in hunger strike over President's remarks on carpentry trade

12 June 2019 - 89   - 0

The Mayor of Moratuwa along with several other councillors and carpenters have engaged in a hunger strike since yesterday (Jun 11) demanding the President to revoke his remarks on the carpentry trade.

The hunger strike comes two days after a Satyagraha campaign opposite the Moratuwa Urban Council failed to win the protestors their demands.

President Maithripala Sirisena had recently stated that he would issue a gazette to ban all 'mobile carpentry sheds' and stop issuing permits for carpentry sheds in future.

However, the protestors insisted that a clause must be included in this gazette to ensure that these regulations will not be implemented in the Moratuwa area.

"Moratuwa has been the trademark of carpentry for a very long time," Moratuwa Mayor Saman Lal Fernando said during the hunger strike.
