UNP suspends membership of Weligama UC Chairman Rehan Jayawickreme

22 May 2019 - 1339   - 6

The United National Party (UNP) has suspended the membership of Weligama Urban Council Chairman Rehan Jayawickreme for breaching the party's disciplinary code, UNP General Secretary Akila Viraj Kariyawasam said.

Mr. Jayawickreme's membership had been cancelled since he had criticised the party's leadership by releasing several letters to that effect to the media, MP Kariyawasam explained.

He also noted that the Chairman was summoned before the party headquarters in Sirikotha to conduct a disciplinary inquiry recently. He had then pledged to refrain from violating the disciplinary code in future.

However, the UNP General Secretary pointed out that the Urban Council Chairman had repeated the offence very recently leading to the suspension of his membership, Mr. Kariywasam explained.

This clearly shows non democracy of the party. As a leader Ranil should answer the points that he criticized. It is unethical to remove the party membership.

If you join a party first you should respect the leadership and abide with party laws. Better to resign and join another party than criticize publicly. People are watching and judging you from your behaviour.

Is this the democracy that Ranil preaches? What has this chap said that is wrong? He has only wanted his deputy leader to hear the party. Surely the UNP cannot be this stupid

Current prime minister has completely ruined the party for over 25 years! Election after election he has lost. And now he has lost the plot! Punishing a junior member for talking the truth. Good on you young lad, brave young fellow

Aiyo Aiyo RW. Still trying to hold your position. You are a senile old man with clear signs of "Asperges" syndrome. Please go to a doctor and please resign from the party and hand over leadership to someone else.
