Prime Minister Ranil Wickremesinghe has instructed that suspects who were arrested over the recent unrest since May 12 be charged under the International Covenant and Civil and Political Rights (ICCPR).

These instructions were issued to Acting IGP C.D. Wickramaratne during a meeting which was chaired by the Prime Minister at the Defence Ministry this morning.

During the meeting, Mr. Wickremesinghe had also called for an inquiry against security or military personnel who were reported to have failed in their duty of preventing such acts of violence.

He had also urged that an inquiry must be conducted to identify politicians or political groups which were involved in fuelling ethnic tensions over the last few days.

Meanwhile, it was also discussed at the meeting to refrain from re-imposing curfew in the North-Western Province provided that the situation has been restored to normalcy in the area.
