Police to establish special unit to penalise social media users who spread content inciting communal hatred

The Police has established a special investigation unit to identify and enforce the law against individuals who spread extremist and content on social media which incite communal hatred, Police Spokesman Ruwan Gunasekara said today (May 13).

The Unit will be tasked with identifying individuals who spread such information, and also to notify the relevant authorities on the future measures which must be taken against such persons, the Spokesman noted.

Accordingly, publishing and even sharing such content would be considered to be an offence, Mr. Gunasekara added while cautioning that suspects would be sentenced to between three to seven years of imprisonment under the Emergency Regulations.

Further, suspects could also be imprisoned for 10 years for breaching the International Covenant on Civil and Political Rights by sharing or publishing hateful content.
