Mahendran extradition: President to respond to Singapore's statement

21 March 2019 - 149   - 1

President Maithripala Sirisena will soon provide an explanation to the country regarding efforts to get former Central Bank Governor Arjuna Mahendran extradited from Singapore, Chief Opposition Whip Mahinda Amaraweera told Parliament today.

By Sandun Jayawardana

Mr Amaraweera was responding to a query raised by Janatha Vimukthi Peramuna (JVP) MP Dr Nalinda Jayathissa from the Government over the statement issued by Singapore's Foreign Affairs Ministry rejecting President Sirisena's recent accusation that Singapore was not providing sufficient support to extradite Arjuna Mahendran to Sri Lanka to face prosecution over the Central Bank Bond scam.

Dr Jayathissa noted that Singapore's Foreign Ministry had said in a statement that Sri Lanka had still not provided sufficient information and documents required under the country's extradition laws to consider extraditing Mr Mahendran.

Mr Amaraweera said that he can assure that the President would provide a detailed response regarding the statement issued by Singapore's Foreign Affairs Ministry soon.

Dr Jayathissa remarked that the question had been directed towards the Government, but that it was being answered by the Chief Opposition Whip.

At this point, United National Party (UNP) MP Mujibur Rahuman quipped that this might be because the President was actually with the Opposition.

The President's response to the Singapore Govt.'s statement should be instantaneous.Otherwise a delayed response will be meaningless and ineffective.
