A fundamental rights petition was filed yesterday (Mar 15) over President Maithripala Sirisena's failure to appoint a permanent Chairman to the Court of Appeal.

Attorney Lal Wijenayake and four other lawyers had filed the petition at the Supreme Court claiming that the President had violated the constitution by not making the said appointment.

The Attorney General, members of the Constitutional Council including Speaker Karu Jayasuriya, and the President's Secretary have been named as respondents in this petition.

The petitioners had sought an interim order to be issued on the appointment of acting Chairmans to the Court of Appeal.
