The deadline for receiving complaints by the Presidential Commission appointed to probe allegations of corruption within the state sector has been extended until 5 pm on March 19.

The decision to extend the deadline was announced due to a rising number of complaints that are being received by the Commission which is investigating into cases of corruption that are alleged to have taken place between January 2015 and December 31 last year.

The previous deadline provided to the Commission was expected to end yesterday (Mar 14) after it was extended from March 07.

A total of 847 complaints have been received by the Presidential Commission so far with 435 complaints being filed during the previous extension period.

Investigations have now commenced into 370 complaints while the Special Police Investigations Unit attached to the Commission is probing 18 cases of corruption. Statements have been obtained from several individuals including ministers as of now.

Retired Ministry Secretary Lalith R. de Silva, Retired High Court Judge Kusala Sarojini Weerawardena, and Retired Deputy Inspector General of Police Vijaya Amarasinghe are the members in the Commission which is headed by Former Supreme Court Judge Upali Abeyratne.
