SLC polls to be held tomorrow as planned

20 February 2019 - 127   - 1

The Appeal Court has announced that the Sri Lanka Cricket election would go ahead tomorrow (Feb 21) as planned.

The polls were speculated to be delayed owing to a case filed by Mohan de Silva and Ravindra Wickramaratne calling for a court order to be issued to Minister Harin Fernando in order to accept their nominations for the post of President and Vice President of the sports body.

The complainants also called for a stay order to be issued on conducting the elections until court had delivered a final verdict on the case.

However, both parties had announced that they had arrived at a consensus as Sports Minister Fernando had accepted the nominations and allowed the complainants to contest for the said positions.

Meanwhile, court also announced that the complaint which was filed by means of a writ petition would be taken up for further hearing on March 21.

Minister of Sports Harin Fernando, the Sports Secretary, and the members of the SLC's election committee have been named as respondents in the case.

Further, court also said that the petition filed by Shammi Perera against the candidacy of Jayantha Dharmadasa for the post of SLC President would also be heard on the next court date.

Some were trying to capitalize on the incident, which had taken place in the Sri Lanka dressing room. Two former Sri Lanka captains who were not involved with this election downplayed the issue, while another Sri Lankan captain was insisting that the guy who leaked yideo should be identified and sent home. Did he want to create more trouble by insisting on such action, without realizing that such action might have a negative impact on the morale of the entire team? If at all, the matter can be probed in to when the team return home.
