UNP refutes claims it was linked to recent protests outside media outlets

The United National Party (UNP) has refuted reports claiming that it was associated with the recent protest carried out by civil rights movements opposite several media outlets.

Issuing a special media release, the UNP said that it has identified the organisers of this protest as civic rights groups which stood for democracy since October 26.

"The UNP respects the freedom of media at all times. It has always stood for journalists and media institutions even when they were attacked or subject to intimidation," the release said.

Further, the release noted that the UNP would also stand for the people's right to free speech. It added that the people of this country have the right to carry out any demonstration that is in line with the constitution.

The release went on to note that media outlets which attempted to chase away the protestors and attack such demonstrations were the real elements of the "black media mafia".

In addition, the release said that it extends its appreciation towards all media outlets which accepted the petition handed over by the protestors while also adding that the party is against the 'black media mafia' which did not accept the petition by displaying a dictatorial behaviour.
