The Police Narcotics Bureau (PNB) unit at the Bandaranaike International Airport (BIA) today arrested a 49-year-old Maldivian national with 8450 counterfeit US Dollars that he was allegedly trying to smuggle into the country.

The forged US Dollars, which had been printed overseas, were in 169 USD 50 notes in a wallet that the suspect had in his possession, the PNB stated.

Police further said that under interrogation, the suspect had told officers that he planned to use the fake US Dollars in a black market goods racket in the country.

The suspect and the seized counterfeit US Dollars have been handed over to the Criminal Investigation Department (CID) for further investigations.
