Strong winds cause severe damage to houses and shops in Hungama

More than 20 houses and shops sustained damage due to strong winds that blew through the Hungama town and its surroundings at around 2.30 this morning (13), the Hambantota District Disaster Management Centre stated.

The strong winds came during heavy rains that fell in the Hambantota district yesterday and DMC officials said it is suspected that a tornado caused the damage.

Thw winds brought down trees and power lines, in addition to blowing of the roofs of buildings. Police and area residents later worked to remove the trees that had fallen, blocking roads in the area.

However, DMC officials said they were yet to carry out a census of damages sustained to shops during the incident and that work on this would take place soon.
