Johann returns home after Everest

1 June 2018 - 418   - 1

Everest conqueror Johann Peiris returned home today to a warm reception of supporters.

He is the second Sri Lankan to summit the world's highest mountain. He successfully summited Mount Everest at 5.55 a.m. Nepal time on Tuesday (22 May 2018).

In 2016, Jayanthi and Johann were the first Sri Lankans to undertake the challenge of summiting Everest but Johann had to return without making to the top as his oxygen tank failed 400 meters before the summit.

Johann has been supported in his Everest bid by the support and encouragement of thousands of his fellow Sri Lankans. Many of them also joined in the efforts to sponsor the costs of the expedition, which amounted to nearly USD 60,000. The ‘Climb Everest with Johann’ campaign, carried out online, allowed well-wishers to sponsor each of the more than 80,000 steps Johann would take on Mount Everest to reach the peak.
