Attacks on foreign tourists: 13 arrests so far

Thirteen suspects have so far been arrested over two separate alleged attacks on foreign tourists in Weligama, Police Headquarters said. 

In the first incident, where several foreign males were assaulted and a female sexually assaulted at Mirissa beach in the early hours of April 8, police said nine suspects linked to the incident have so far been arrested. All nine are due to be produced today (19) for an identification parade. 

Six of the suspects were taken into custody on April 13 and were remanded till April 19 after being produced before the Matara Magistrate's Court the following day. 

Three more suspects linked to the attack were arrested on April 17 and remanded till April 19.  

Meanwhile, four arrests have also been made regarding an attack on five Israeli men at Midigama beach on April 15. One suspect was arrested on April 17 and remanded till April 26 by the Matara Magistrate's Court. 

Three more suspects linked to the assault were arrested yesterday (18). The suspects, aged 17, 18 and 23, are residents of Midigama, Ahangama and Mirissa. They too have been remanded till April 26 when all suspects are due to be produced for an identification parade.
