Colombo shares end mixed on opposition polls win

12 February 2018 - 143   - 0

Sri Lankan share prices ended mixed on Monday despite early gains as brokers said the market was unaffected by Saturday's election in which the main opposition party swept the poll.
The All Share Price index marginally lost 0.08 per cent ending at 6,567.32 with the S&P gaining 0.33 per cent to stand at 3,742.66. The day's turnover was at Rs.116 million.
The recently formed main opposition Sri Lanka Podujana Peramuna (SLPP) led by former President Mahinda Rajapaksa pulled off an unlikely victory, securing 45 per cent of the vote at Saturday's islandwide poll compared to the United National Party (UNP)'s 33 per cent. The SLPP has won a staggering 222 LG bodies from a total of 340. The UNP is the main coalition partner in the Government. The market is unlikely to see any major swings in the next few days with investors awaiting for direction from policymakers following the election reversal by the governing parties. – DEC -
