The medical storage room of the Walasmulla Hospital was severely damaged by a fire which swept through it this morning (2). A large number of equipment and stocks of medicines were destroyed due to the fire.

The fire had begun at about 12.30am today. Its cause is yet to be determined, though a faulty refrigerator used to store medicine is believed to be responsible.

For the moment, medicines needed for the hospital are being supplied through the Hambantota District Health Services Office.

The extent of the damage is yet to be estimated. Hambantota District Health Services Director A.P.R.S. Chandrasena said he had sent a team to the Walasmulla Hospital to investigate.
