Two women who tried to smuggle in 7.8 kilograms of gold jewellery worth over Rs 40 million were arrested by Customs officials at the Bandaranaike International Airport (BIA) this morning (13).

The suspects, who had arrived in the country from Dubai, were stopped by Customs officers on suspicion as they were about to leave the airport.

On checking the suspects, officers found the gold jewellery concealed inside a girdle belt worn by one of the women.

Further investigations are ongoing.
