India develops Most Ven. Maduluwave Sobitha Thero village in Anuradhapura

India and Sri Lanka signed a MoU to develop Most Ven Maduluwave Sobitha Thero Village named Elapathagama in Anuradhapura District on last week, Indian High Commission in Colombo said. 

The MoU was signed by Taranjit Singh Sandhu, High Commissioner of India to Sri Lanka and Mrs. W.K.K. Athukorala, Secretary to the Ministry of Housing and Construction in the presence of Honourable Speaker of Parliament Karu Jayasuriya. 

Venerable Monks from the Mahasanga, former First Lady of Sri Lanka Mrs. Hema Premadasa, several members of Parliament, senior Officials from Government of Sri Lanka, Ravi Jayawardhana, Chairman of Ven. Maduluwawe Sobitha Thero Commemoration Foundation, other Board members of the Foundation participated in the event. 

The village will be developed using a grant of  Rs 300 million from the Government of India.  The project envisages construction of 153 new houses, a multipurpose community building and alms hall, internal water supply system and renovation of Monk’s Quarters & library.

This project is in line with Government of Sri Lanka’s policy of rehabilitation of rural villages for economic development. It will benefit 153 families residing in the village.

    We recognise , with due respect,this contribution for development of Elapathgama village in the Anuradhapura District in the cherished memory of late Ven Maduluwawe Sobhitha Thero who initiated this project since the beginning under his leadership of Jathika Veera Padanama Yasapala Nanayakkara, Secretary Jathika Veer Padanam, Kotte Naga Viharaya.
