The Government would pay a month allowance of Rs.50,000 for three months for families in Meethotamulla until they are provided with full compensation or new houses. The allowance will be for families who opt to relocate from the high risk zone in Meethotamulla.
The Government Information Department said an allowance of Rs.10,000 will also be provided to the families as transport costs when removing their property.
On the instructions of the President and Prime Minister, the relavent Ministries have agreed to either provide a house or the value of their house as valued by officials from the Valuation Department. This will be done within three months.
Meanwhile, the process of providing houses for those displaced by the Meethotamulla tragedy commenced today. The initiative is conducted by the Ministry of Megapolis and the Urban Development Authority (UDA). The Government says each house is valued at Rs.4 million.
The houses will be provided to any displaced families willing to accept the offer.
